We encourage our students to participate in national or international music festivals, tests, and
competitions because we’re confident that these challenges will provide valuable opportunity for
growth, learning, and achievement—thus helping to enrich their musical journey.
NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) is a professional organization dedicated to music education in New York State. NYSSMA provides various programs and services to support music educators and students, including music festivals, competitions, professional development
opportunities, and advocacy for music education. Our students participate in yearly solo musical
festivals. They prepare and perform solo pieces, play scales and read music for adjudication. Students receive feedback on their performances and are graded according to established criteria. Participating in the NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival provides students with valuable performance experience and can also serve as a means of assessment and recognition of their musical progress.
The ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal School of Music) is a series of music examinations conducted by the ABRSM, an organization based in the United Kingdom. These exams assess the musical abilities and skills of students across various instruments. Students will be prepared for all levels during their instrument classes and/or by taking and extra theory group classes.
After completing the examination, students receive a grade based on their performance, ranging from Pass to Distinction. Achieving a high grade in an ABRSM exam can be beneficial for students pursuing music education or a career in music, as it provides a recognized benchmark of their skills and abilities.
Additionally, many universities and music conservatories require ABRSM qualifications for admission
into their music programs.
Test preparation can be integrated into your routine if you choose to take one. Your teacher might offer additional weekly lessons specifically focused on preparing for the test, helping you to build skills and confidence for your assessment.
